{..kIERY..}

I dropped the last of my photo albums into the medium sized cardboard box and folded the lids shut. I exhaled and looked around my bedroom, mentally checking if I had rid the furniture of all their contents.

“Looks like that’s the last of it,” he said, his voice booming through-out the room.

I turned around and faced him. “M’kay well, I just have to get these boxes into the living room and I’m all done.”

“You cleaned out everything?” He rested his figure against the doorframe.

“Yeah.”

“Even the closet back there?” he asked, tilting his head toward the second closet my room contained.

“Yeah, I just have to get the shelves down, and throw the shoe boxes away.”

“Aite. While you’re doing that, I’ll get these into the living room.”

“Okay.”

He licked his lips, and watched me as I walked toward the closet and slid it open, ‘that look’ in his eyes. “No, Spec,” I spoke. He chuckled and picked up one of the boxes that lay one the bed, exiting the room without saying a word. I smiled and shook my head.

It’s been about two months since I had that ‘run in’ with Marcus and I haven’t really seen him since - well, minus the times he came over to pick up Mj.

He sent me flowers, gifts and cards for two weeks straight saying how sorry he was and how much he missed me … it was sweet, and to be honest, he really came off as sincere, but … I wasn’t having it.

However.

Spec and I have been hanging out a lot since then, and to say feelings were getting stronger, would be an understatement.

Even though we weren’t officially a couple, we sure acted like one … spending a great deal of time on the phone … seeing each other regularly … having sex … and even spending a weekend in Brazil.

He wasn’t comfortable with, nor did he like the way things were going and the title we didn’t have, but to be perfectly honest, being in a relationship with Spec was something I didn’t think I was ready for. Especially since it meant going public.

I removed the shelves and stacked the shoe boxes on top of them, carrying them out to the living room.

I set them down where the glass table used to be and took a look around. The living room looked just as it did when I first moved in. Boxes everywhere, and everything unplugged and taken apart.

I turned around and caught Spec looking at me. “What?”

“Nothing,” he replied, licking his lips. He used his foot to manoeuvre a box out of the way and walked around me, checking Mj’s room to make sure everything was emptied. “So, you okay, or you want me to wait until the men get here?”

“You have to go?”

“Yeah. I was supposed to meet Birdman and Wayne about …” he paused to check his Diamond Tourbillion Jacob & Co™️ watch, “two and a half hours ago.”

I stared at him in disbelief. “Are you serious?”

“It’s no big deal,” he shrugged. “We just have to lay a couple tracks on the Carter 4 album.”

“Specc, yes it is,” I spoke, disregarding what he just said. “I can’t believe you.” I placed my hands on my hips and shook my head at him. He was unbelievable, seriously.

He’s been doing this for some time now -- that is, going to his meetings late, so we can finish watching a movie, re-arranging his schedule, so he can take Mj to soccer practice, and shrugging off important things like this, so he can be with me.

Yeah, I know, any other female wouldn’t mind a man doing all these things for them, but that’s not me. I didn’t want him bending over backwards at the cost of his job. It might be sweet in the eyes of others, but in mine, that Shit was just wrong, and he knew I hated it.

Which was why he promised not to do it anymore.

But you can see how much of a promise that was, seeing as he’s here - a week later - helping me move out of my house temporarily so it could be renovated.

He turned on his BlackBerry 8700r™️ and stepped closer to me, “I know how much you hate that Shit, but it was all for a good cause.” He smiled, “plus, you know if you call me I’ma come runnin’.”

I looked at him for a while and shook my head, smiling. He was so adorable.

“Thanks for helping me pack my stuff, I appreciate it.”

He bent down and kissed my lips. “No problem, sexy.”

I swung my arms around his neck and smiled at him. There was something about this man that had me weak.

I had no idea what it was, but I was too grown to deny it. Either I was falling in love, or lusting, super hard.

Either way, it was something serious.

He ran his hands along my arms, and stared at me as he brushed the unruly strands of hair from my face. “You know we gotta quit doing this, right?”

“Doing what?”

“This. Just fooling around. I don’t wanna do it, Kiery.”

Oh boy.

I knew where he was going with this.

“Lets not talk about this now.”

“Then when, Kie? I can’t do this anymore” … “We already act like it, why not just be it?”

I took my arms from around his neck and looked past him.

“Kiery, what are you so afraid of?”

I sighed, “Spec, I don’t wanna talk about this.”

His phone started ringing and he checked it. “There they go … I’ll talk to you later.”

And with that said, he left.

*******

I pulled into the small parking lot of the Johnson Family Daycare Centre and stopped behind a Ford Explorer™️, pausing to look at my At&t Samsung Propel™️ before killing the ignition. “Hello?”

Trey’s deep voice came from the other end, “Can you pick up Tevon and Tristan for me.”

“Yes I can Booski im here now to get Mj.”

“Ok and Thanks. I’ll pick them up at around seven, seven-thirty.”

“At my parents house,” I reminded him.

“Yeah, aite,” he answered. “Later.”

“Bye,” I spoke into the phone, ending the call.

I got out of my Red Dodge Charger Hemi™️ and set the alarm, slipping my Brown framed BeBe™️ sunglasses onto my face.

I entered the fairly large building and made my way through the halls to the main room. Upon seeing the door open, I walked in.

“Well, what do we have here.”

I turned around and stepped back a bit as a tall Caucasian man approached me.

“Hey.”

“Hello there, nice to meet you. The name is Shaka Blancee' with the extra e' at the end ,” he spoke, extending his right hand toward me. The other placed firmly on his hip.

“Nice to meet you too, Shaka. Kiery Johnson,” I replied, releasing his hand from the shake.

He smiled, revealing his pearly whites, and I noticed his eyes.

They were of a deep and unusual blue, and very captivating.

“The pleasure is all mine,” he said. “I love your outfit by the way, BeBe is one of my favourite designers.”

“Thank you, mine too.”

He smiled, “I can tell. It looks good on you too. Especially that belt, custom made?”

“Yeah, it was a gift from my brother,” I answered.

He brought his hand to his heart and shook his head, “oh Lord, I just love a man with good taste.” He ran his fingers over the buckle, “absolutely stunning.”

He clasped his hands together and walked past me to the desk that sat at the front of the room, and I laughed.

I couldn’t help it, he was too adorable and too much.

“Have a seat,” he spoke, pulling a chair adjacent the desk. “In case you’re wondering, the kids are in the gym playing a game of basketball. They should be back in a few.”

“Oh, okay,” I answered, sitting down.

I slid the sunglasses up and rested them atop my head as he pushed a stack of papers to the side of the desk.

“You have beautiful eyes. They chnage colors with the light, right?”

“Yeah something like that, and thank you.”

I laughed, “you’re probably the second person to get that.”

“What can I say,” he smiled, “I have an eye for detail.”

“Hey, Kiery.”

I turned around and smiled as Johanna entered the room, the children flowing in behind her.

“Hey, JoJo, how are you?” I asked.

“I’m good, just trying to deal with these bad ass kids” … “I see you’ve met Shaka . Hope he’s behaving.”

I laughed along with Shaka, “yes I have, and yes he is.”

“Good,” she laughed.

Shaka excused himself to tend to the kids, and Jojo took the spot he previously held. “Did you want to talk to me about something?”

“No,” I replied. “I’m just here to pick up Mj and the twins.”

Her face grew puzzled and she looked beyond me, “Marcus came by earlier to pick up Mj.”

“What?”

“Yeah. He said he called you.”

“I haven’t spoken to Marcus all week,” I replied.

Her eyes widened a bit, “oh my goodness. He said you were fine with it.” She reached forward and retrieved the phone, “I’ll call him.”

“No, it’s fine,” I said, stopping her. “It’s okay.”

I closed my eyes for a second, to process the information.

Marcus had to be out of his damn mind.

“I’m sorry, Kiery. I really thought you said it was okay, I mean, you and Marcus are usually on good terms, so I always take both your words for it.”

I sighed, “it’s all right, I’ll just take Tevon and Tristan.”

She got up and helped Horris gather their things, as I helped them put on their hoodies. “Te, where are your shoes?”

“Over there,” he answered, pointing toward the last cubby-hole.

He ran off to get them and I bent down to help Tristan get on his Jordans™️.

“Again, I’m really sorry, Kiery,” Johanna spoke.

“It’s fine, you didn’t know,” I replied, picking up Tristan’s backpack.

Trevon came running back with his Nikes™️ thudding against the floor and I took his backpack also. “Say goodbye to JoJO, boys.”

“Byee,” they spoke in unison.

She said goodbye to them, and I hugged her and waved goodbye to Shaka, before leaving.

“Why must you go out of your way to annoy me?”

“What are you talking about?” he asked, irritating me even more.

“Where is my son?”

“He’s fine, he’s right next to me.”

“What is wrong with you, Marcus?” I asked.

“Ain’t nothing wrong with me. I was in the area and decided to pick him up … I’m still his father you know.”

“However, I’m the parent he stays with. If anything happens to him in or out of my care, I’m the first person they’re coming to, not you.”

“Whatever, Kiery,” he spoke. “He’s fine, aite? I’ll drop him off in about an hour.”

“You can’t, because I’m not going to be home.”

“Where you gonna’ be?” he questioned.

“That’s beside the point. Where are you?”

“At the studio,” he answered.

“I’ll pick him up in the next hour then,” I finished.

“Aite, fine.”

“Bye,” I said, ending the call and sliding my phone shut.

Leave it to Marcus to turn a fairly good day into a bad one.

I glanced through my rear-view mirror at the boys as they talked between themselves.

“Are you guys hungry?”

“Yeah,” Te answered.

I smiled, he was always up to eat.

“So, what is it going to be?” I asked. I had a feeling they were going to say Macdonald’s™️.

“Micky Dee’s,” Tristan replied.

I laughed, “yeah, I thought so.”

Tevon and Tristan, were Trey’s five year old, twin nephews. They currently stayed with him and have been doing so since their mother, Ashley, Trey’s twin sister, died in a Motorbike accident two years ago.

Child Services opted to put them in foster care, but Trey wasn’t having it.

He then offered to move them in, but was rejected.

According to Child Services, if one parent is deceased, the other parent is legally supposed to care for and raise the children that are left behind.

However, in Tevon and Tristan’s case, this couldn’t happen.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Their father, Trevor -- better known as, Danger -- was very much involved in his children’s lives. He was a good man, was more than financially able to take care of them, and probably the kind of father every man aspires to be. But he was notorious in the streets and lived the kind of life that neither Trey, his parents, even Trevor himself, wanted the twins to grow up around. Trey persisted the case in court and eventually, they saw him fit to be their legal guardian.

Of course to me, and everyone else, it made perfect sense. He’s been around them since the day they were born.

After taking them to Macdonald’s™️, I brought them to a little ‘Fun Fair’ I spotted on my way to the Daycare.

Surprisingly, we had fun, and in the next two hours or so, after going on all the rides twice, they were ready to leave.

“Mj’s going to be so mad, he didn’t go,” Tristan voiced.

I smiled, “yes he is, but what’s the deal?”

“We won’t tell him,” he replied.

“Right,” I spoke.

I pulled into the filled parking lot of the Young Money Recording Studios™️ and drove around to the back.

Mike was by the door with a few other guys talking what looked like ‘small talk’, and I parked by the fence and got out, motioning for him to come over.

“What up, Keiry?” he greeted.

“I’m good,” I smiled, “how’s it going?”

He shrugged, “same ole’, you know how it is. You here to pick up lil’ man?”

“Yeah, can you watch these two for me?”

“No problem,” he replied.

I smiled at him and turned back to my car, sticking my head through the driver’s window. “Boys you remember Mike, right?”

They nodded ‘yeah’.

“All right, good. I’m going to go inside and get
mj. He’s going to stay with you for a few seconds, okay?”

“Okay,” they replied.

I thanked Mike and entered the building, heading for the second door on the left.

I walked in and saw Drake in the booth, recording a track. He tilted his head toward me, winking, and I smiled and blew him a kiss.

He was one of the few rappers that was genuinely down to earth.

I turned the corner as Lil’ Wayne did the same, touching my arm to say hi, and saw LaRon sitting on one of the sofas, Mj’s head resting on his arm.

He saw me and ran a hand over his face, “what up, Kiery?”

“Hey, LaRon.” I walked over and looked down at Mj. I noticed his tear stained cheeks and gave LaRon a look. “What’s wrong with him? Where’s Marcus?”

“He’s in there talking to someone,” he answered, tilting his head toward a closed door.

I tried to listen for his voice, but quickly remembered all rooms were sound proof.

I bent down and wiped my son’s cheeks, “why is he crying?”

“Kiery, I don’t think- I mean, I don’t know if …” he replied, hesitating.

“What’s wrong with him LaRon? Why is he crying?” I repeated, my tone changing.

He looked at me and sighed, “Jazmine hit him.”

“She did what?!”

“Yeah, but Kiery, calm down, Marcus’s in there dealing wit her right now,” he spoke, referring to the same room.

I brought Mj closer to me and looked at his face, his right cheek was beet Red. “Oh, hell no.”

I put him to sit back and barged into the room, ignoring LaRon’s yells.

They both stopped to look at me and I charged at her, her head making a loud thud as it slammed into the wall. “Do you have a death wish? Let me know, ‘cause I can make it happen.”

She looked at me in shock, and Marcus grabbed my sides. “Kiery, calm down, I got it.”

“You ain’t got Shit! If you did, she wouldn’t have slapped him!” I yelled. I kept my grip on her neck and glared at her, “what the hell were you thinking!”

She cleared her throat, “Kiery, get your hands off me, and get out my face .”

I tightened my grip, pinning her to the wall. “My hands haven’t moved, and I’m still here … do somethin’”

“Kiery, let her go, I already dealt with it.”

“Have you seen his face?” I asked her, ignoring Marcus.
“I don’t care about his face, what about me?” she retorted.

I took my hands from her shoulders and stepped back, punching her dead in the jaw. “What about you?! He’s four years old!”

“Kiery, stop it! Shit!” Marcus yelled, grabbing me by my arms. “That’s enough!”

“Get off me, Marcus!” I shouted, shoving him away from me. “If you didn’t pick him up this Shit wouldn’t have happened!”

“Kiery, calm down,” LaRon spoke, walking over to me. “You have every fucking right to be mad, but this ain’t your style. Just be easy.”

I gritted my teeth and exhaled. I looked toward the door as Mj walked into the room and motioned for him to come to me.

“Apologize to him,” I bellowed at Jazmine.

“What?” she asked, wiping the blood from her mouth.

“I don’t have a speech impediment, so I know I didn’t stutter,” I spat.

“I’m not apologizing to that little brat! He kicked me!”

“That’s because you hit me first, you slut!” Mj shouted.

Her eyes widened at his choice of words and she stepped towards him, raising her hand to slap him.

I moved towards her and gripped her throat, “you put your hands on my son again, and it’s gonna’ be an all out boxing match up in this Bitch. You understand me?”

LaRon held unto my arm and stepped in front of me, pushing me back.

“I should beat the Shit outta’ you,” I spoke, still glaring at her.

“What the hell is going on in here?”

I turned around as Larry walked into the room and closed the door behind him.

“Nothing, I was just leaving,” I spoke.

I shot Marcus a look, “the next time you pick him up without my knowledge or consent, it’s gonna’ be your ass.”

“Kiery, he’s still my fuckin’ child.”

“I don’t give a damn!” … “How much of a parent can you be when you let your girlfriend hit your child and get away with it!”

“I handled it!”

“I’m sure you did,” I replied.

“I’m going to get a restraining order against you, Kiery , just you wait,” she spat, stepping right in front of me.

“A restraining order?”

Is this Bitch serious?

I laughed, “is that the little piece of paper that says I can’t come near you?”

“Yes it is.”

“And if I do, then what? You throw the paper at me?” … “Please,” I scoffed. “If I’m gonna’ beat your ass, I’m gonna’ beat your ass regardless. So don’t come at me with that restraining order bullShit.”

I brushed past her and took Mj’s hand, leading him out of the room. We got his backpack and other belongings and left.

Was I still mad?

Hell yeah.

But I decided to let it go for now.

We got outside and I stopped and bent down before him. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” he nodded.

“Good,” I replied, Hitting his behind with my belt. “Where did you hear the word slut?”

The fresh tears rolled down his cheeks and he kept silent.

“Hello? I know I’m not out here by myself.”

“I heard one of daddy’s friends say it,” he replied, crying.

“So what made you think you could repeat it?”

He didn’t answer, just kept crying.

“Mr. Cooper, stop crying. I need an answer.”

“Because, because, she hit me, and, and, daddy was taking her side.”

“It doesn’t matter,” I told him. “I was wrong for what I did back there, but you never call anyone outside their name, do you hear me?”

He nodded, “yes.”

“She is older than you, so therefore, that makes her a what?”

“Adult,” he answered.

“And what do we give adults?”

“Respect.”

“Exactly,” I spoke. “It’s not about what you hear your father’s friends say. They are grown. And what grown people say, is grown people’s business. And what’s grown people’s business?”

“Grown people’s business,” he replied.

“Thank you” … “Now, you can say that word as many times as you want in your head, ‘cause that’s your personal space. But if you let it come out your mouth again to anyone at any time, you’ll be put up for adoption. Are we level?”

“Yes, mommy,” he sniffed, his voice low.

“Good. Now gimme’ a kiss so we can go.”

He wiped his cheeks and kissed my lips and we walked towards the car.

{ .. KIERY ..}

I pulled up my dark Grey, Giorgio Armani™️ pants and did up the zipper as I glanced at the clock on the kitchen wall.

“Shit.”

I was already late.

The phone rang and I ignored it. Whoever it was could leave a message.

I adjusted my Black halter top, making sure I wasn’t bearing too much cleavage, and released my hair from the ponytail it was in.

“Trey just called, he’s gonna’ pick up Mj and the twins from Daycare and take them to practice.”

I looked at him as he walked in and took my apple from my hand, taking a bite.

He was dressed casually. Sporting a pair of Ed Hardy™️ jeans shorts, a Black wife beater, and his Black Jordans™️.

I smiled.

My parents would have a fit if they knew he was here, let alone staying with me.

I retrieved my apple from his grasp and took a huge bite, giving it back to him. “You helping to coach today?”

“Can’t. I’m laying a couple tracks on Plies album,” he replied, walking around me. “What time do you get off work?”

“Twelve,” I answered. “I promised Raven I was gonna pick her up for lunch.”

“Aite, well, let me know when you’re done. I told Christine we were coming in.”

I glanced at him and frowned. Suddenly remembering my promise to accompany him to the BET Awards Show, and to get my dress fitted.

We still weren’t officially a couple. And I mentally started to re-trace every conversation we had, trying to figure out what possessed me to say yes.

“Can we do the fitting tomorrow?”

“She’s going out of town,” he replied.

Right.

“Well, I can’t do it today.”

“What do you mean? You were the one who made the appointment,” he said.

“And that was before I made the decision to pick up Raven,” I answered.

He removed his two-way from his waist and sat on one of the bar stools. “Whatever, Kiery man.”

I sighed. This was more than likely going to lead to an argument.

Something I didn’t have time for.

“Look, I’ll get the dress fitted when Christine gets back.”

“She’s going out of town for two weeks,” he spoke.

“So?” I said with a redundant tone.

“The award show is next week,” he replied.

I opened the refrigerator and took out a bottle of water, “then I guess I’ll just find another stylist.”

“Where are you going to find another stylist right now?” he asked, getting tense.

He knew where this was going.

“I don’t know, Spectacular,” I answered, swinging the fridge door shut, “if I can’t find another stylist, I’ll just find another dress, damn. It’s not that serious. I don’t even want to go to this fucking award show.”

He slid his two-way shut and got up, “then you shouldn’t.”

I sighed as he walked out, and checked the time, 9:38 a.m.

Shit.

I exited the kitchen and grabbed the dark Grey, Armani™️ blazer off the sofa’s arm, putting it on. “Can we talk about this later?”

“You want me to pick up Mj fromTrey’s crib?” he asked completely ignoring my question.

I looked at him, knowing there was no point in continuing the conversation. “Yeah, if you can.”

“Aite.”

He walked out of the house and I followed him, locking the door behind me.

“I’ll see you later,” he spoke.

“Yeah, bye.”

I started my car and waited for his Black Maybach™️ to pull out of the driveway, before backing out, and heading for work.

CONT’D
*******

“Good morning, Ms. Jackson.”

“Morning, Paige.”

I stepped out of the elevator and buttoned the few buttons of the blazer, pushing open the large glass doors that led to the conference office.

“Why are you late, Kiery?”

“Because the meeting started before I got here,” I answered, taking my seat at the head of the table. “Anyone else needs to ask a question?”

Nobody spoke, and I smiled, “good, let’s get going then.”

“Well, we just received the portfolios from Cover Girl. We’re waiting on you to schedule the models,” Justin said, leaning forward.

“Do we have a slideshow?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Okay, run through it with Nathan and James, and keep in mind we need to select a few for the show.”

“Speaking of the show, there hasn’t been a confirmation regarding the merge,” Emanuel voiced.

“We can’t have that, the show is in fourteen days,” I replied.

He nodded, “I know, I’ll get on it.”

I uncrossed my legs and slid my chair to the right of the huge oval desk. “Sandra can you pull up the F.W portfolios?”

“Sure.” She pulled them up on the projector screen and Daniel slid the binder in my direction.

“Let’s go through the files and contracts,” I spoke, flipping open the binder.

“How many girls do we need?” Daniel questioned.

“Approximately, Twenty-seven.”

The rest of the meeting went fairly well, and we finished up in the next two hours.

I exited the room and walked towards the section of the building that contained my receptionist’s desk, the waiting room, and my office.

“Hey, Kiery, how was the meeting?” Lasandra greeted.

“Tiring, as always.”

She smiled. “You have a few messages. Five, to be exact.”

I leaned onto her desk and she continued. “La’toya called to see if you were still coming to get her. Your mother called to ask about the plans for the renovation. Breanna called to confirm tomorrow’s brunch. Michal Early called from the Cover Girl Modeling Agency regarding the merge. And Marcus called he asked me to tell you he called.”

“Thanks,” I replied, heading towards my office. “I’ll get back to everyone.”

By the time I was finished calling everyone back, sitting through another conference, getting some paper work done, and interviewing a few potential models, it was 2:16 p.m. and I was beyond tired. I didn’t call Marcus back but I have a good damn reason. I paged Lasandra, letting her know I was leaving for the rest of the day and to forward all my messages.

At 3:00 p.m. I was out of there. And, as promised, I picked up Raven at my parent’s Estate on schedule.

I thought it would be fun if I took her to lunch at the Level Two. We could cruise the shops on the North Strip after that and relax with each other.

I pulled out of the driveway and looked over at her as she put on her seatbelt, “you doing okay?”

“Yeah,” she muttered, looking out the window.

“You sure? Mom said you’ve been out of it lately.”

She looked at me, “I’m surprised she noticed. She’s been so busy screaming at everyone about the damn garden and patio. Not to mention your house.”

I laughed, “you know how she gets.”

“Yeah, well, I’m sick of it,” she replied, turning back to the window.

According to my parents, Raven had been acting real Bitchy lately. But there was nothing Bitchy about the way she acted today. In fact, she was ‘barely there’ the rest of the ride. And she made it all the way through lunch almost without speaking.

I couldn’t help wondering what was bothering her.

“So what’s the deal, Rae? A new guy giving you a problem?”

“Kind of.” She shrugged noncommittally, and then as her eyes filled with tears, she said, “not really.”

“So what is it then?” I pressed as the waiter brought our cappuccinos.

She didn’t answer.

“Come on, Rae … whatever it is, it won’t be as bad once you share it.”

Apparently it was, because after staring at me for what seemed like minutes, she dropped her head in her hands and started crying softly. “Kiery …”

I pulled my chair around the table and brought her close, rubbing a hand across her shoulders.

Thank God we were in a private booth.

“Come on, Rae, tell me,” I whispered.

But when she raised her face to mine again, I could see the bottomless despair that had overwhelmed her.

My worrying rose another notch.

“Raven, please …” I begged.

She was silent.

And for a long while, it seemed as if she couldn’t find the words. Until …

“I’m pregnant.”

I almost choked on her words as she said them.

“I’m having a baby …” she continued, crying quietly.
