Chapter 27 |Hospitals|

“Say what?” I could hear Corey say through the phone as I sat back in the passenger seat of my car since the liquor left me a little instable in my vision. “Okay. Be there in a second.” he continued. After getting of the phone I decided to speak while hearing my slurred words form into a sentence.

“Naw man. Take me home.” I said thinking about Clare. I know she is probably pissed at me by now.
“I can‘t man. We gotta go to the hospital.” he said.
“For what?” I asked angrily. “I got some shit to discuss with Clare before things get out of hand.” I yelled at him knowing damn well he can’t stand for anyone to yell at him.
“Well meet her at the hospital since that’s where she is at.” he said as the words sank in.
“What the hell you mean?” I asked slowly because of the distorted speech impediment at the moment.

He didn‘t say anything as my patience began wearing thin.

“I know you heard me. What‘s wrong with Clare?” I shouted but no more words. He knew my stubbornness at the moment while unmentionable words leaped from my lips. “Stupid ass girl fucked up my whole life.” I said mumbling but Corey’s keen ears heard me.
“Who you talking about?” he asked annoyed as we pulled up to the hospital.
“Nothing.” I sighed heavily.
“Look man. Stay here til I see if everything is ok.” he said opening the door.
“No if Clare is here I want to see her.” I said not thinking much of the situation.
“Look, let me just see where they are and I‘ll be back to get you. Sit here and relax.” he told me as I sunk down in my seat wishing I could get some damn answers.

My car door closed as I watched Corey running towards the entrance of the emergency room. I slipped out my cell to dial up Clare when I noticed my phone was dead.

“Shit.” I said aloud in the car. My ears caught the sound of an ambulance as I watched the blue lights flashing to see it make its way to the emergency entrance.

Since the car was a push button starter I got out of the car locking it with the keys in my pocket. Although slightly drunk, I was aware of my surroundings. I slipped through the entrance and towards the front desk.

“How may I help you sir?” the older lady at the front desk asked as I was still checking my surroundings to see if I could spot Clare. “Sir…” the older lady asked again this time my eyes catching sight of Corey and Jinn who is holding lil Kaslyn on her hip and holding Zay’s hand in the other.

I rushed over there leaving the lady with much attitude at the desk. The closer I got the more tears I seen running down her cheek. My heart began pounding as I interrupted their conversation.

“Where is she?” I asked as my voice grew hoarse.
“She is here.” Corey said.
“No. Where is she?” I asked getting louder while individuals glanced my way.

Jinn eyes grew watery even more as it spilled into tears.

“Marcus. Can I talk to you for a minute?” Corey asked.
“You know I want to see Clare.” I gre enraged as the lady at the front desk tried to tel me to calm down.
“Stop acting so damn ignorant Marcus. You gonna get us kicked out.” he said in a low tone. “I know you’re a lil tipsy but you know better than tat.” he continued to preach.
“Now Clare is here and she need your support more than ever right now so stop acting an ass. Alright?” he asked for reassurance.

I nod and we both walked back towards as well as taking Kaslyn from Jinn’s arm.

“I‘m going to sit in the waiting room.” he said walking towards the sitting area.

Jinn wiped her eyes and told me to follow her. I felt my stomach drop wondering what could have possibly went wrong. White walls with room numbers made the hollow place feel cold and clammy. I felt so insecure in hospitals. The light flickered above room number 203. We stood at the door. Jinn faced me as her stance grew serious.

“Are you ready to face her Marcus? You smell like liquor. What the hell were you and Corey were doing?” she asked a million questions.
“I‘m fine. I just want to see her. What happened?” I asked wanting to know before I entered.
“I don‘t feel comfortable telling you. If you and Corey would stop running fucking games then you would have been there to help her. That’s right, I‘m getting on ya‘ll case because Clare needs you Marcus, but I‘m not sure if you are prepared for this.” she said with sort of a disdain in her voice.

I slightly shoved her to the side to open the door.

“Can ya‘ll watch Zay for me tonight. I‘m going to stay with Clare.” I whispered.

She just nod her head and walked off down the long hall way. I stood at the door clenching onto the doorknob scared to face Clare. Never had I been scared to face anyone. How did she have such an effect over me.

Pushing away the fear held within me, I entered into the room to see Clare laying in the bed with her eyes closed in sound sleep. I stood over her, reading the monitors with little knowledge, I felt my eyes water to see her once more laying in a similar position a couple of weeks back. Never had I expected to see her once again in here so soon.

I was hoping to see her in here within the next couple of months delivering our beautiful baby. My hand wiped away the tears in my eyes as I continued standing over her in silence. My finger brushed away the strands covering her face. She moved some then opened her eyes.

“Marcus.” her voice sound hoarse so she cleared her throat.
“I‘m here baby.” her eyes instantly filled with tears as she turned her head.
“Baby, talk to me. Tell me what‘s wrong.” I said in a low tone as I stooped over her.

Silence. She was hurt I could tell but I was hurting just as much as she is for holding it in. I slipped in the bed with her pulling her close to me.

“You don‘t have to tell me.” I said kissing her forehead as her sobs grew louder.
“Marcus. I lost the baby.” she whispered softly with a sound of shame in her voice.

In that instant, my tears came back. I was hoping that wouldn’t leave her lips.

“Marcus. I am so sorry.” she said weakly.
“Why are you apologizing? Its not your fault. it’s the bastards who did this to you.” I said thinking of Moe and the Clare’s Ex. They will pay. I kissed her forehead once more as I could taste my salty tears mingling in between the kiss. Her tears continued staining my shirt.

Its time to move away. Who would have known so much could have happened within a short span. What felt like eternity had only been thirty minutes when the doctor walked in. He noticed me and must have acknowledge who I was.

“Hello sir. I‘m sorry about your lost. Usually at that point, there is nothing to do to save the fetus. Clare, you are free to go home after the nurse discharge you from the machine. We need to schedule a follow up visit. Is next week good on your schedule?” he asked.

I cut in between the conversation.

“We are returning home in a few days. We will set up an appointment then.” I said as the doctor nod his head.
“Very well then.” I said as the doctor nod his head.
“Very well then. Clare if you need to see me sooner, definitely give a call to set it up.” the doctor said sounding fresh with her. He finally walked out.

“Everything will be fine baby.” I said. She didn’t look up at me, just stared away in space. The nurse walked in so I slid off the bed and left her to dispatch Clare from the machine. She was still looking off as though she wasn’t concerned about leaving. What could she be thinking about so heavily?
