“Shadow.” I whispered his name. My mouth had gone dry. I looked him over. He was still as sexy as he always was. His white tee against his dark blue jean shorts complemented his caramel complexion. The black, white and gray fitted cap matched the Jordan`s he wore on his feet. No, no, no, no. He finally looked over at me and smiled.
“Arai`lea,” Shadow said with a smile on his face as he walked towards where I stood at the bottom of the steps. Once he reached me, he gathered me in his arms for an embrace, but my arms were like dead weights, and they refused to hug him back. When he realized I wasn`t hugging him, he pulled away and looked at me.
“How you been Baby girl?” he asked me. I was still in shock that he was here, in Nashville, at Lipscomb.
“I`m fine, Shadow.” I didn`t want to be near him, so I took a slight step back. Shadow chuckled a little.
“So you can`t be next to me now?” he asked. I just stared. “Baby, why you acting like you don`t love me? I missed you girl.” Shadow smiled the smile that he knew made me melt. I looked away from him, but he placed a finger under my chin and turned me back to face him. Then, he began to slowly come closer to me.
“Arai`lea.” I heard his voice; my knight in shining armor. I couldn`t stop the smile from finding its way to my face. I turned to look towards the direction his voice was coming from. Laython.
“Hey, Laython,” I said once he reached where I was standing with Shadow. Laython looked at me and smiled.
“Hey Beautiful.” He reached out for a hug, and I wrapped my arms around his neck and melted. I was in my own little world, until Shadow cleared his throat, ruining everything. I pulled away from Laython, slowly and unwillingly. I stayed next to Laython as I looked at Shadow again.
It was then that I noticed that shadow and Laython were glaring at each other. I knew that Laython did not like Shadow for what he did to me, but the stares they were giving each other seemed like they knew each other. I heard Shadow chuckle.
“Well, damn. Look at this shit here.” I was confused. I felt Laython put his arm around my waste and pull me closer to him. Shadow looked down at me. I hated that his 6’2” frame made me feel so insignificant, being as I stood at 5’6”.
“Arai`lea, I thought you would do better than this. I mean, come on, even if you think we have nothing going on anymore and you were gonna move on, you could have picked a better nigga.” Shadow was talking about Laython like he knew him. I felt Laython get tense.
“Man, Shadow, shut the hell up,” Laython said. “You know, when Arai`lea told me about her ex, I never thought it would be you, dude. What the hell has gotten into you?”
At this point, I was completely confused. How do these fools know each other? I looked at Laython.
“What is going on?” I asked. I needed answers, and I be damned if didn`t get them. Laython looked at me, and sighed.
“Shadow and I grew up together in Brooklyn. We did everything together; this nigga was my best friend, like my damn brother. I would have done anything for this dude. Then, the summer before our freshman year, we got into some shit, and instead of telling the cops the truth, this ho blamed it all on me. I would have spent the rest of my fucking life in jail, but the cops had no evidence that I had done anything, so they let me go. We both had to move, so I ended up here, and he ended up in Jacksonville, and I never talked to him again.”
I looked at Shadow. He had told me about his life in Brooklyn before moving to Florida, but I never remembered him telling me about some trouble he was in.
“You never told me you were in trouble, Shadow.” I glared at him. This fool had probably lied to me about everything. He looked back at me.
“It was none of your damn business, Arai`lea!” he yelled at me. Laython pushed me behind him and stared shadow down.
“Don`t yell at her,” Laython said calmly. Shadow laughed.
“Nigga, that`s mine,” he said, pointing at me. “I was her first EVERYTHING. You can`t replace me, dude. Arai`lea may think she leaving me, but shawty is sadly mistaken.” I was scared. I wrapped my arms around Laython, and held him tight. Laython put his hands on top of mine, and shook his head at Shadow.
“No, Shadow, you are sadly mistaken. Arai`lea is her own, and I be damned if I let your punk ass lay a hand on her.”
Shadow laughed. “Who said it was gonna be me? I got her, don`t you worry. I`m in Nashville now, and I ain`t going nowhere. She is stuck with me. I won`t lay a hand on her, but I can`t guarantee her safety.” He chuckled before looking around Laython at me. “See you soon, Arai`lea.” He smiled and then he walked off.
Once he was gone, Laython turned to look at me. Fear was written completely across my face as tears fell down my cheeks.
“Don`t cry, Beautiful,” he whispered, as he wrapped me up in his arms. I never wanted him to let go. “Come on, let’s go to your room.”
I nodded my head, as we walked into my residence hall and up to my room. Ashleigh was not there, which made me feel a little better. I put my stuff away as Laython closed and locked my door. I hid in my closet and put on a tank and some basketball shorts. All I wanted to do was lay down.
When I emerged from my closet, Laython was sitting in the chair at my desk. I crawled into my bed and under the covers. I looked at Laython to see him smiling at me.
“What is it?” I asked, with a smile on my face.
“You are so beautiful,” he whispered. I hid my face under my comforter. Laython laughed.
“Come lay with me,” I whispered to him. “I really don`t want to be alone right now.”
Laython stood up, took his shoes and hoodie off, then crawled into bed behind me. Although he wasn`t under the covers with me, he had his arm around my waist and he pulled me close. I was in heaven. This is what love is. I smiled as I closed my eyes.
“Goodnight, Beautiful,” Laython whispered in my ear. He fit his head into the crook of my neck and kissed me softly. I smiled.
“Goodnight, Laython.” I smiled, and snuggled closer to him, and drifted off into my own little world of perfection. The last thing I remembered was Laython whispering in my ear.
“I`ll never let anything happen to you, my Beautiful Rai.” He kissed me again, I drifted off to sleep.--------------------------
