Chapter Forty-Two; Accusations
Rome
Rome had had one too many drinks just thinking about every scenario that could have been going on behind his back. His calm, thoughtful mindset had been lost three shots ago. Janae should have known better, she should’ve known. Now his clouded mind began to doubt that this baby was even his. What if it wasn’t? He knew he wouldn’t be able to bare to see her carry another man’s child, he just couldn’t. He shot back another round of Vodka as he sat back on his couch. He had been home for hours, and when Janae declined to answer or return any of his calls, he began to think the worst of her. He knew he and Tiffany had not been on good terms in a while, so he doubted that she would stop Janae from doing something foul. After all, she was there too. She saw that bastard escort Janae across the street as though she bared his child. The bolts on his door shifted and he looked up. In came Janae with several bags in tow. He stood himself up, barely able to stand straight. Janae flipped the lights on, surprised to see Rome standing hazely in the living room.
“Babe, I-…I thought you left?” Janae said skeptically as she tried to hide the bags.
“I bet you did,” Rome’s words slurred as he traveled slowly towards her, “Where you been, I been calling you all night.”
“Bae, it’s 8 o’clock, ” she replied, squinting her face at his weird behavior, “And I had some errands to run. Are you drunk?” Janae dropped the bags as she examined him, he definitely was.
“I saw you with your boyfriend Janae, what the fuck is going on?” Rome cursed, his voice clear and dangerous. Janae looked at him confused as hell.
“Rome what are you talking about?”
“I saw the fuckin pregnancy tests in your bathroom Janae! You wanna lie to me and tell me that’s my fuckin’ baby?! I just saw yo ass wit’ that bitch nigga today!” Anger ripped through him, she could at least have the decency to admit who she was with just hours, possibly minutes ago.
“Okay, you’re drunk, and you are
clearly getting your shit mixed up.” Janae said, she was more hurt than anything, how could even think that of her? She wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because he was drunk. She wanted to be the one to tell him they were expecting. It was supposed to be their moment of blissfulness, now it had turned into a drunken mess. “Let’s just get you to bed before you say something else you’ll regret.” Janae tried to pull him towards his bedroom, but the moment her hand toughed his arm, he snatched it away.
“The fuck off me! You gon’ stand there and ignore what the fuck I just said? Huh? You fucking around on me? I fuckin’ trusted yo ass, after all this fuckin bullshit and you come here with this? Fuck you Janae!” Rome’s drunken tongue had hit her hard, this wasn’t the man she loved. She tried to make herself believe that it was just the alcohol talking but part of her felt as though he had been pondering her fidelity for months now. She was a ball of hormones and right now she was on the verge of breaking down into a fit of tears. She had planned this moment out all day. It would be beautiful, he would be happy, and they’d start their family together, happily.
“Fuck me?” Janae yelled back, her index finger pointing into her chest, ”You don’t think I’ve dealt with your shit too? I don’t even know where you are 90% of the time! You fuck me and you leave!”
“We aint gotta fuck, just get the fuck out!” Rome was drunk, angry, and increasingly aggressive. He made his way to the door and swung it up, Janae watched in awe, he was really going put her out.
“Rome I’m not leaving, we’re gonna-“
“JANAE!” Rome’s deep voice roared, it was as though the bass in his voice had traveled through her body because she jumped instantly. “Get out, now.” In that moment Janae had paralyzed herself as she starred back at him. His eyes were unrecognizable. She didn’t know this, this drunken fool. He was treating her like a hoe off the street.
“Don’t make me pull you outta here, Janae I swear. You need to fuckin bounce.” He said to her. Even his tone was unrecognizable.
“Rome please, this isn’t you.” Janae cried, tears rolling down her rosey cheeks. Rome’s eye hit the ceiling; he was done with her excuses. “ It’s not true, I haven’t-“ her words were cut when Rome came towards her. He gripped her arm tightly and yanked her from her position. Janae yelped in pain as he grabbed her and began pulling her towards the door. “Let go!” she pleaded as she struggled to free herself, his grip only tightening as he moved closer to the door. “Rome you’re hurting me let go!” she yelled at him as she pushed him hard enough to knock off his balance. He released her arm as he stumbled back, catching himself on the wall.
Janae watched this, stranger, pull himself together. She shook her as tears followed like a broken dam; before he could say another word, she took her exit and didn’t look back…
Rome slammed the door moments later when he realized she was gone. He headed towards his bedroom, but something caught his foot, causing him to lose his balance for a second. He looked down to the bags Janae had brought in. He rambled through them to see boxes of white rose pedals, a small rectangular box with a knotted bow, and a mint green photo book. He pulled the book open to see that it held three photos side by side, however, his vision was too blurry to make them out. He tossed the book and headed towards his bedroom.

Tiffany knew something was wrong when she looked at her best friend standing outside her door. She had an even bigger feeling that it had something to do with Rome.
