Chapter F I V E

Quentin plopped carelessly down onto his cream sofa, staring at nothing in particular. His eyes burned horribly- the tears fighting so hard to stay in their cage. Twenty minutes prior, this would have been the last thing in his head when these uniform-clad men showed up to his abode. His first thought was that they were coming to arrest him for not paying a few tickets that he had received, but when her name slipped from their lips- Que knew then that some shit was bad.
“I’m sorry to inform you that your girlfriend, Lauren Mitchell’s is dead. We found her inside Club Toxic earlier this morning.” The Caucasian officer placed a picture on the coffee table that sat horizontally across from him. Quentin gasped at sight.
It was his girl, his life, his-everything.
She was sprawled on a bed with a man positioned under her. Quentin’s focus should have been on the grisly sight, but now all that registered was that she was fucking another dude while he was downstairs in the same club.
“Where were you last night Mr. Carter, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I was there- at the Club.”
“You were there all night?”
“Yes.”
“With her?”
“No…she had um,” Que cleared his throat, “She told me that she would be right back. I thought she was headed to the bathroom, so I told her okay. Time flew by and she still wasn’t back and I was dancing with another girl a-”
“You didn’t think to go look for her?”
“No, she does shit like this every time we go out. I’ll leave and she usually comes home the next morning. I mean, I knew she was cheating, but I never brought it up.”
The Hispanic female officer wrote notes down on a miniature pamphlet as Quentin spoke.
“Do you know anyone who would’ve wanted your girlfriend dead?”
“No, not that I would know of. Everyone that she hung around seemed genuine. Um did you contact her father?”
“Yes we have.”
Que nodded and then shook his head. It was so unreal. He buried his face in his hands.
“We’ll keep in contact with you Mr. Carter.”
Que nodded but didn’t lift his head up; he was too distraught about the whole situation. Just a few hours ago Lauren was begging him to go to the club with her and now she was dead.
He had tried numerous times, racking his brain for some type of information, useless or not, as to who would kill Lauren. Granted she wasn’t the easiest to get along with, but her attitude was something that you could get around. People didn’t hate her; at least that’s what Quentin thought.
The house telephone rang, pulling Quentin away from his deep concentration. He glared at the caller ID before pressing down on the green icon, answering the phone call.
“Quentin sweetheart, is this you?” The elder lady on the other end of the phone spoke shakily. It was Lauren’s grandmother whom he was really close with. She had approved of Que when Lauren had introduced him to her family a few years back.
“Yes Ms. Rose, it’s me.” He paused to swallow the lump in his throat. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine chile- sad, but fine. How are you holding up son?”
“I’m not sure. It…it just happened so suddenly ya’ know? I just hope that they find who did this.”
“I do too. Lord knows I do. Are you going to come help Greg with the funeral arrangements and such?”
Quentin cringed at the name. Everyone in Lauren’s family liked him except for ‘Greg’, her father. He hated Que with a passion and none could change his mind.
Que spoke truthfully, “I don’t know Ms. Rose.”
“I understand. You know you can still come see me sometime. Don’t be a stranger ya’ hear?”
“Yes ma’am. Take care of yourself.”

After wrapping up his telephone conversation, Que stood to his feet and sluggishly made his way to the bar that sat near his balcony’s sliding door. He spotted the deep purple velvet bag with gold accents and writing almost instantly. He snatched the bag open and pulled the brown liquor bottle, Crown Royal, from solitude and unscrewed the top. Quentin placed his lips to the opening and took one huge gulp, not worrying about grabbing a cup. The liquor burned down his throat and he hissed, but that didn’t stop him from downing the half empty bottle until it was none left.
