Chapter Six
Indigo Nicole Jones
I laid in my bed after I got off the phone with Marcus. I hated being lied to. Too many people had lied to me. I couldn’t even tell Mariah about this. I sighed and heard my mama come in the door. I yelled hi to her and then called Riah.
"Hey, girl." I tried to sound upbeat.
"Hi! Just got back from my date!" She yelled in my ear. I perked up to listen to her, I had forgotten all about that.
"With Raheem, right? How was it?"
"Girrrl," She purred, "It, and he, was on point."
I laughed and waited for her to tell me about it.
"Hold on," She said and I heard shifting.
"Ma," Marcus started before I cut him off.
"Do not even think of talking to me." I said, with a stern voice.
"Indigo, listen-"
"To what? Some more lies?" I questioned sarcastically. If he thought for one second I was going to listen he was sadly mistaken. I heard Mariah ask what was going on.
"Riah, I’ll be back with your phone."
"Oh no, you’ll give her the phone back right now." I demanded.
He told me no and I rolled my eyes at his attitude. Yes, it annoyed the hell out of me. Yes, I was ticked off every time he showed it. But, still, it was a turn on.
"Me and China are over." He said and I heard him close a door. I was a little shocked. And I really hoped he was telling the truth….then maybe. Maybe we could…No, this was Marcus. I couldn’t trust him.
"Why should I believe you, Marcus?"
"Why you gotta attitude with me? I didn’t lie to you. I can’t just change overnight, Indigo, shit don’t work like that."
I rolled my eyes and huffed, "This is too damn complicated already and we ain’t no where near friends and definitely no where close to being in a relationship."
"I’d like to think your closer to a relationship than you think."
I laughed, "Oh you think so?"
"I know so, Ma. You can’t resist this." I laughed really hard when he said that.
"You kissed me, remember?" I said with a hint of attitude.
"You kissed me back, remember?" He shot right back.
"But you started it."
"You finished it, Indigo. So either way it goes, you like me a lot more than your willing to admit."
He had me there. And I was so afraid to let him know it. So I was silent for a minute.
"See that silence proved it, ma." His voice was deep and mellow….sexy.
"Marcus, I don’t know what you talking about, dude." I tried to play it off, but honestly, I have had a
crush on Marcus since fourth grade. This was music to my ears and it was getting harder and harder for me to resist. I needed to get off the phone.
"Marcus, I’ll see you soon."
"Yeah, you will, cause I’m taking you out. Get dressed." I stared at the phone like, ‘who are you?’.
"Marcus, It’s a school night." I glanced at the clock. Of course it was only five but I still had homework, and chores, and….I’ll just be honest, I didn’t trust myself to go out with him and nothing happen.
"Indigo, it just turned five."
"How do you know I don’t have anything to do?….What about my man, will he appreciate that?" I asked him and smirked, thinking I had gotten myself out of it.
"Your man wouldn’t have appreciated your tongue all in my mouth but it didn’t stop you, now did it? Anyway, I’m on my way. You better be dressed or else."
"Else what?" I dared him. And if I didn’t hear the right answer we weren’t going nowhere.
"Or else you might get a little something more than a kiss." Click.
Marcus Ramone Cooper
"Indigo Nicole Jones! You don’t keep a man waiting on you like this!" Her mama shouted. I heard Indigo laugh.
"He wants to go out with me so he will wait for me!" She shouted back. I just shook my head and looked around her house. The walls were a bright blue and everything else in the living room was white. It was nicely decorated.
Indigo had my full attention when she walked down the stairs. She was wearing a black and purple shirt that was fitting to her chest and loose where her stomach was. Her jeans were tight and fit her hips perfectly. She filled out a simple outfit way better than China every could. She looked down at me and gave me a small smile. I smiled back at her as she finished coming down the stairs.
"What do you have planned for me, Mr. Cooper?" She plopped down on the couch by me.
"You like music?" I asked her.
"Who doesn’t? I love music. I’m a R&B girl so all that Wayne I know you listen to has to go while your in a car with me." She said while getting up and walking towards the door
"How you gone dominate what I listen to in my car?" I asked and smiled while doing the same.
"Cause I got it like that." She said and smiled at me. Her smile was so pretty.
She locked the door behind us, "Now what about music?" She asked getting me back on topic. We walked to my Escalade, I opened the door for her and then opened my door.
"My cousin’s performing at this restaurant. I’m gone feed you and you gone be able to listen to some soul music."
She nodded, "Is he looking for a deal?"
I laughed as I made took a short cut, "Naw, ma. He has one. He about to drop his third album. I think he said it’s…..ready or some-"
"Ready?!" Indigo yelled.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Trey Songz?" She yelled and asked again. Again I nodded.
"Songbook, baby!"
I laughed at her, "You like him?"
She nodded, "Like? I adore him. And why didn’t you tell me to dress cuter? Trey Songz is gonna be in the building."
I stopped at a red light, "You here with me, Indigo. Keep them eyes on me."
She smiled a little, "…Okay, but you gotta do the same."
I leaned over quickly and gave her a kiss on the cheek, "That’s a promise."
I started driving again, "It’s so nice out here." I said more so to myself. She agreed with me.
"I love San Diego."
"Are you going to miss it when you move?" I asked her. She shook her head.
"Daddy has decided to use one of his properties in La Jolla. So I’m still here."
I nodded and pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant. I got out and then opened her door. "Thank you." She batted her eyes at me, playfully.
I slipped my hand around her. She looked at me and shook her head while we walked in. The restaurant vibe was sexy. The lights were dimmed and it had a nice, sexy, sophisticated vibe to it. She nodded, "I’ve never been here. It’s nice. What’s it’s called?"
"Bertrand at Mister A’s."
She scanned the menu, "This place is so expensive." She frowned down at the menu. "I didn’t bring enough money-"
I cut her off, "When you with me, it’s on me. Pick what you want." She nodded and went back to looking.
The atmosphere was romantic. I pulled her menu down.
"Psssst." I stage whispered to her. She laughed at me and pushed a piece of hair from her face.
"What?" She stage whispered back.
I reached over and touched her face, "I like you, Indigo."
Indigo looked down, "I’m a be honest with you. I like you too, but I don’t think I can get past all that history we went through. "
I opened my mouth to speak but she shook her head, "Marcus, let me talk now. You trying to have everything super fast and I can’t do that. I can’t forgive you overnight so don’t expect it. I can’t trust you over night, so don’t expect that either. You know why I was so hurt that day? Cause you had just told me you were going to change and then you let your boys talk about me. While you stood there. I don’t like being lied to. Too many people have lied to me. So don’t play with me, Marcus."
I took in everything she was saying, "Okay, Querida. We'll take it slow."
She raised an eyebrow and sipped her Sprite.
"It means sweetheart."
She rolled her eyes, "Your making me like you a lot more than I should, Marcus." I smiled as we started to hear the beginning of "I Need A Girl" I grabbed her hand and we rocked to the music.
Her back was to my chest and I leaned down and started to sing, "It gets lonely in business. Need a homie who’s the realest. Someone who wants to find out all that I have to give. Who can bring me what is missing. When I talk she wanna listen. Sitting patient steady waiting. For the day when I can face it. The one who can love me for who I am and so much more. Is it you?"
She turned around and smiled at me and titled her head. She liked me a lot, I saw it in her eyes. Now how could I explain to her that we couldn’t go public when we actually got together?
