Chapter Seven
Indigo Nicole Jones
My mama grilled me with questions as soon as I got in and ended her interrogation with, "I like him. He’s cute and he seems genuinely interested in you, Indi." Coming from my mama, it meant a lot. She was very intuitive so I nodded and headed upstairs. I went into my room and grabbed some sleep clothes and headed to take my shower. I smiled to myself as I felt the hot water hit my body. But it wasn’t because of it, I went out on a date with Marcus. The it guy of the school. I sighed and grabbed my Appletini body scrub , lathered up and started scrubbing. I tried to calm myself down and think of the realities: He could be lying to me, he could be just trying to hit….he could be serious. I shook my head, I was thinking too much Mariah would say. Riah. How would she take the news? How would she react? Again thinking too much.
I stepped out the shower thirty three minutes later. I slipped on my night clothes and headed to my room. It was about nine then. When I went into my room I turned on Anticipation. I smiled because after he performed while we ate I got to meet him. He was so cool and down to earth. And too tempting. I forgot who Marcus was and that he was in the room when he looked at me and sung a little. I looked at my phone and called Mariah back.
As soon as she picked up the phone she asked, "What the hell is going on with you and my brother?"
I rolled my eyes, "Nothing, Riah."
"Don’t give me that. You went and saw my cousin today. And went out to eat. At the fanciest restaurant in San Francisco!"
I sighed, "We’re trying to be friends, Riah. And that’s it."
"Whatever. I was supposed to know."
"Mariah, there was nothing to tell." I told her honestly. At least to me there wasn’t. "How come you didn’t tell me you cousin was Trey. After I go blabbing to you about how sexy I think he is."
Riah laughed, "It wasn’t a big deal to me. I just ignored your fantasies."
I laughed at the way she put it, "Not a big deal? It’s Trey Gimmeyo Songz."
I realized I was on speaker when her mother yelled, "Is that what he’s calling himself these days? What is wrong with that boy?"
I laughed, "Riah take me off speaker."
"Okay, your off." I heard her shut her door. "Now how was dinner with my bro?"
"It was good. We talked and ate and danced. We’re cool now."
Mariah was silent for a few minutes, "Indigo….Do you think you and my brother could ever get serious?"
I thought for a second, "I don’t know, Mariah."
"Indigo, he’s a great guy. Don’t get me wrong. A great one. But you and Marc are too different for it ever to work out. I don’t wanna see either of you hurt." Mariah said crushing my high.
Beep, Beep.
Marcus. "Riah, hold on."
I switched over to answer his call, "Hey, you. Thanks for tonight."
"Your welcome. Is Mariah grilling you on the other line?" He asked, I could tell he was smiling from the tone of his voice.
"How did you know?" I got under my covers and got comfy while "More Than That" was playing.
"Because I hear her. What did you tell her when she asked about us?"
I bit my lip, "I told her, I didn’t know. And then she told me that we wouldn’t work out."
"Do you believe her?" He asked me.
I was silent.
Marcus Ramone Cooper
Her silence told me she did. But I couldn’t blame her. "I’ll let you go back to Riah." I said about to hang up the phone.
"Wait! Marcus, I don’t know what I believe…. But I know what I hope. I hope that we can have a relationship. An that you’ve changed. But not for me. For you."
I nodded and took in what she was saying. "Indigo, I’m trying."
"You promise?" She asked me.
I laughed, "Yes I promise."
"Talk to you later, Querida."
She waited a second, "Alright. See you tomorrow, Poppi."
"Why Poppi," I asked her. I didn’t have a problem with it because it sounded so sexy coming from her mouth. Even took my mind a couple of places it shouldn’t be.
"Because," She giggled, "I wanted to call you something in Spanish too."
I laughed at her and we got off the phone.
About thirty minutes later, Nique burst through the door. She was doing better. The doctor was giving her some medication that wasn’t supposed to hurt the baby. She sat down at my computer desk. "You took her to see Trey, huh?" She gave me a big smile that I returned. Nique and I were so close, we told each other everything voluntarily.
I nodded and she laughed again, "You feeling Indigo. I never thought I’d see the day you’d stop being mean to her."
"I never thought I would either. When I realized I wanted her it shocked me. She was actually about to cry when I saw how beautiful she was." I admitted to her.
Nique’s face held a shocked look, "I’ve never heard you refer to any girl as beautiful. Always sexy."
"I know. What about you and Rick, mama?" I asked. She rolled her eyes and pushed her hair away from her face.
"Rick is on some dumb shi-" I gave her the look and she rephrased it. "Rick is acting really stupid right now. He knows I’m pregnant. He knows it’s his. But I did cheat on him and he told me that I was gone do without him for that."
I shook my head, "Yeah, Nique, you did the Nigga wrong and he has every right to not want anything to do with you," When I said that I received a piercing glare and she strummed her nails on my desk, "But my niece or nephew shouldn’t have to be without their dad." I laid back on my dad and told myself I would never leave my kids without a dad. No matter what the circumstance.
"Marc, I love him! I deserve him too!" She shouted at me. "But he don’t want to hear that."
"If he cheated on you would wanna hear that?" I asked her. She locked eyes with me and shrugged.
"I don’t know."
Mariah opened the door with the house phone in hand, "Phone, Marcus." Nique waved and mouthed good night to me and left along with Mariah.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Yooo," My best friend Pierre yelled in the phone.
"What’s up man?"
"Nothing much." I was debating on whether I wanted to tell him when he made my decision for me.
"Why I see you with fat girl Indigo?" He asked.
I remembered what Indigo said, "Don’t talk about her like that, man."
"What you talking about dude?" Pierre asked. I took a deep breath.
"P, man, I like her. A lot. I’m making her my girl." I waited on his reaction.
"Marc. Dude. You know how many sexy girls go to our school and you want her?"
"Yeah, Pierre. Now, you can’t be talking about her. Not you or anybody else. That’s mine and you gone treat her with respect." I
flexed my authority so he knew I was serious.
"Aiight man. But, Indigo?"
"Indigo." I said.
"Wow. So… how’s it going with her man?"
"She wants to take it slow. So I’m taking it slow. But that’s mine." I told him, realizing I didn’t care about who knew.
I picked up my phone and sent Indigo a text.
Querida, I know you said take it slow, but my homie asked and I had to tell him. Your mine.
--------
Not five minutes later I got a text back.
Yours? I think not.
------
"P, let me hit you back man."
I quickly called Indigo.
"I’m not yours, Marcus." She said full of attitude.
"Well, see as of now. Pierre, who gossips like a girl, knows. And he’s gone tell. The words gone get out. So, Bay, your gone be treated like you’re my girl."
She huffed and then shuffled around.
"Indi, Mama, is it such a bad thing to be my girl?" She was silent for a second and I waited on her answer.
"….No. Marcus, I wanna be your girl."
